Build a New Section
Note:: Build Mode provides more flexibility than the Editor, but it is more complex and should be used carefully, especially if you’re new to Webflow.
If none of the existing section templates fit your needs, you can create a custom layout using the Blank Section component. This allows you to build a section from scratch using individual elements like text, images, buttons, and layouts — without needing to use the Designer.
Add the Blank Section Component
- Add the Blank Section component the same way you would add any other section template.
(If you need help with this step, refer to the lesson on adding sections in Build Mode.) - Once added, the Blank Section provides an empty space that already matches the width and alignment of the rest of your site.
This section is now ready to be filled with content.
Adding Elements to the Section
When you hover over the Blank Section, you’ll see an option to add a component inside the section.
This allows you to place individual elements such as text and images.
Creating a Layout
Single-Column Layout
If your section only needs one column, you can begin placing elements directly into the section.
Best practice:
Long blocks of text should not span the full width of the screen for readability.
- If your content includes long paragraphs, first add the Width Limit component (found under the Utility category).
- Place all text and related elements inside the Width Limit component.
Multi-Column Layout
If your section needs multiple columns:
- Open the Layout category.
- Choose a column layout (e.g., two-column or three-column).
- Drag it into the section.
- Place your elements inside each column as needed.
Spacing Between Elements
If you stack multiple elements (such as a heading, paragraph, and button), you’ll need space between them.
- Use the Gap components found under the Utility category.
- Place gap elements between content blocks to create consistent spacing.
Avoid manually stacking elements without spacing — gaps ensure the section remains visually clean and readable.
Final Step: Add Your Content
Once your layout is built:
- Fill in all text
- Replace images
- Check spacing and alignment
Your custom section is now complete and ready to publish.
