Different Roles

Explaining the different roles you can use to edit your website, which one to use, and how to switch between them.

Webflow uses roles to control what each person can access and edit. This helps ensure that everyone has the right level of access—whether they’re designing pages, building new content, updating existing content, or simply reviewing the site.

Each user is assigned a site role, which determines what they can do on a specific website.

Common Site Roles

Designer - Best for users who need full design control. Use this role for major site updates, design changes, and structural edits.

  • Access the full Designer
  • Create and edit layouts, styles, and components
  • Build new pages and sections
  • Manage CMS collections and settings

Use this role for major site updates, design changes, and structural edits.

Marketer - Best for users who need to build pages without changing the site’s design system. Use this role for creating landing pages, campaign pages, and other content-rich pages.

  • Create and edit pages using pre-built components
  • Use Build Mode
  • Add and arrange sections
  • Update component content and properties
  • Manage CMS content

Content Editor - Best for routine content updates. Use this role for regular website maintenance and content updates.

  • Edit text, images, links, and SEO settings
  • Update CMS items like publications, team members, and news
  • Modify content within existing components

Reviewer - Best for stakeholders who only need to review content. Use this role for approvals and collaboration.

  • View the site
  • Leave comments and feedback
  • Cannot make edits or publish changes

Workspace Owners vs. Members

Workspace Owner

If you own the Workspace, you automatically have the highest level of access.

  • Full access to all sites
  • Manage billing, settings, and team permissions
  • Typically assigned the Site Manager role on all sites

Workspace Member

If you are invited to a Workspace, your access depends on the role assigned to you.

  • Your permissions will match your assigned site role
  • You may have access to one or multiple sites
  • Your abilities are limited to the responsibilities of that role

How to Switch Between Roles

If you have access to multiple modes (for example, Designer and Build Mode):

  1. Open your site in Webflow.
  2. Click on the menu icon in the top-left corner of the interface.
  3. Use the 'Preview role' to choose between:
    • Design Mode
    • Build Mode
    • Edit Mode (if available for your role)

The options you see will depend on your assigned role.

Choosing the right role helps protect your site while giving each team member the tools they need.
